Clever ways to use wire nets — I made a laundry basket that doesn’t get mouldy

It might look like a basic grid, but the Daiso wire net can be turned into almost anything with a bit of creativity.

Daiso is my go-to for simple, affordable fixes around the house. One item I’ve found really useful and versatile is the wire net. It’s usually sold as a wall grid for hanging small items, but with a little imagination, you can do so much more with it.

DIY laundry basket with Daiso wire nets

The wire net is like a blank canvas. Once you realise how easy it is to tie the grids together, it opens up endless storage possibilities.

I made a custom-size laundry basket using wire nets to replace our old fabric one, which had started to get mouldy. The linen cover couldn’t be removed and washed, so whenever it got dirty, all I could do was wipe it down which was such a hassle.

It was hard to find a washable, non-fabric alternative that also had compartments like our old basket, which I like for sorting. I spent weeks looking, but nothing fit the space under our ironing table in the service yard just right.

As if sizing wasn’t tricky enough, mould is also a constant concern in our Singapore’s humid weather. If used clothes aren’t washed right away, they stay damp, and over time, that creates the perfect condition for mould to grow.

A laundry basket that allows air to flow and doesn’t trap moisture is ideal, and this DIY solution was exactly what I needed. It’s breathable, easy to clean, and I got to build it to the exact size I wanted.

All you need is some cable ties to connect the wire grids, and you’re ready to go! It only took me a few minutes to put together this laundry basket.

The only extra thing I added was four caster wheels at the bottom, which I also attached using cable ties to help the basket glide smoothly. So far, they’ve held up really well and are sturdy enough for everyday use.

With various sizes available, I can easily customise the build to fit my space perfectly. I even added two wire panels inside to create compartments for dividing laundry.

As Daiso also sells accessories that work with wire nets, you have a lot of options to expand your storage.

I clipped on a small wire basket to store my dog’s pee pads, since the laundry basket sits right next to his tray. I also used S-hooks to hang another basket on the side for dirty rags, keeping them separate from the clothes and easy to access.

More creative wire net ideas to try

This clever hack is not only simple and renter-friendly, but also surprisingly adaptable. You get storage, structure, and flexibility in one. And the best part? If you change your mind, you can simply snip the ties and store the grids flat.

Here are some fun ideas you can build with this hack:

  • Custom-size storage baskets — store anything from toys to dirty clothes (like mine!)
  • Movable crate — slide it under your sofa or bed to hide clutter
  • Vertical shoe rack — perfect for narrow entryways
  • Mini shelf — organise kitchen spices or bathroom toiletries
  • DIY pet cage — use cable ties as hinges so your pet can go in and out easily
  • Simple furniture — create a small side table or desk
  • Sports gear holder — keep your gym mats or badminton rackets upright

This little DIY changed my laundry corner for good. If you’re short on space or just love a good hack, give it a try.
